Filling the Voids The Emergence of Independent Contemporary Art Spaces in Africa

'Chimurenga' is a word of Shona origin - a linguistic communication spoken predominantly in Republic of zimbabwe, that means to fight or to struggle. Its etymology is linked to the story of Murenga, a Zimbabwean warrior who led the country's first insurrection against English colonialism. The prefix 'chi' means 'in the spirit of'; therefore, 'chimurenga' could be translated every bit 'in the spirit of Murenga'. CHIMURENGA – WHO NO KNOW GO KNOW

A palavra 'chimurenga', de origem Xona, língua falada predominantemente no Zimbábue, significa 'luta'. Sua etimologia está ligada à história de Murenga, guerreiro zimbabuano que liderou a primeira revolta no país contra o colonialismo inglês. Assim, com base em parcerias e outras formas criativas de arrecadar fundos – principalmente de organizações internacionais –, o coletivo mantém uma rede de parceiros que colaboram para a realização do projeto. De acordo com Greame, se Chimurenga dependesse do apoio do Estado sul-africano, não existiria.
